About this Masterclass

This masterclass will cover what it takes to run an illustration business, from two illustrators who have spent the last four years building sustainable freelance careers.

Suitable for those who are considering making the transition to freelance illustration, Maisy and Sarah will be sharing everything you need to consider when starting out - drawing from their own personal experiences and learning curves.

All the bases will be covered, from what to include and how to present your portfolio/website, diversifying your income, part-time jobs, power of collaboration, contacting clients, essential business skills, how to manage your social media and scheduling, keeping on top of project deadlines and time management whilst staying mindful of your mental wellbeing + lot's more.

This masterclass will be in the format of a 3.5 hr talk - giving you not only valuable information but action steps to implement to make sure you're on track with your goals.

Maisy and Sarah have put this masterclass together knowing the struggles of starting out as freelance illustrators, it can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate. The masterclass has been put together considering the current creative landscape, each contributing as freelancers actively working in the industry and sharing up-to-date insights from different areas within illustration and managing a creative business.

About Small Fry

Small Fry Collective is a creative hub based in Manchester, United Kingdom. Founded in 2018, Small Fry hosts a range of creative events, projects, workshops and talks in person and online, bringing together creatives from across the globe.

Small Fry was founded and is directed by Illustrator and Animator Maisy Summer. Maisy works alongside colleague and friend, Illustrator and Animator Sarah Wilson. Since graduating from Manchester School of Art in 2018, both have been working across illustration, design, animation and education in different capacities.

Both Maisy and Sarah bring to the table a range of knowledge from different areas of the creative industries, and put creative learning and community at the forefront of their mission. Small Fry aims to champion creativity, and brings together a wealth of creatives spanning from students, to hobbyists, to professional designers and illustrators working in the industry.

Small Fry hosts the Manchester meet-up for the AOI, along with an ongoing collaboration of online illustration and animation workshops and courses with Elephant Academy. Other selected clients include: The British Council, University of Manchester, Cardiff University, Winsor & Newton, Pankhurst Centre, Women in Print, and Manchester School of Art.
